Supplier verification is one of the most important steps in any sourcing project from China. Without proper verification, buyers risk engaging with suppliers who overstate their capabilities, misrepresent their products or lack the capacity to deliver on time.
The first step is always business registration verification. In China, this means checking the supplier’s business license through official channels. The license indicates the registered company name, registration number, registered capital, legal representative and permitted scope of business. This check alone can flag many common issues.
Factory assessment is the next critical stage. A proper factory assessment covers production capacity, equipment, workforce, quality management practices and current order loading. Many suppliers in China are trading companies rather than manufacturers — this is not necessarily a problem, but buyers should understand the supply chain structure.
Certification review is particularly important for buyers with compliance requirements. CE, ISO, SGS, BV and similar certifications should be verified directly with the issuing body when possible. Copies of certificates are easily forged.
Export history is a practical indicator of a supplier’s experience with international trade. Suppliers with a documented export history to similar markets are generally lower risk than those without international experience.
Finally, a commercial risk assessment considers factors including the supplier’s financial stability, any negative trade references and their approach to contractual obligations. This is often the most subjective part of the verification process but is equally important.
